Who is the face behind Music Together with Lakeside Music?
Meet Ms. Kat.
I am “Mama” to three little jammers. My husband is my best friend, and the absolute greatest dance partner. We live in Port Washington with our rescue pup, Banjo.
I have been making music since the age of five, starting with piano. I took a pause as I navigated my way through early adult life, but then about ten years ago, I decided to have my old acoustic restrung at the local music shop. The owner of the shop restrung my guitar, and my heart, and now we have two small music shops (Lakeside Music - Port Washington & Sheboygan), three beautiful kids, and a crazy puppers named Banjo. We also just added a coffee shop to our Port shop (Banjole’s Brews).
I have been leading Music Together classes for over four years. First out of my Port shop, then virtual, and now indoors/outdoors in Cedarburg. Combining music with nature has been a remarkable experience. Being outside is definitely my happy place. Hiking, camping, gardening, exploring new places, kayaking, walking, birding… I love it all. That being said, outdoor classes definitely are my jam, but I do love being back in an indoor classroom as well. :)
Why did I start leading classes?
Community. It is all about community. With my son, I had some severe postpartum depression. My husband was diagnosed with NHL (cancer) when our little dude was three- months old. This was a tumultuous time for our family. When we were able to “come out of our cave” as I will call it, Music Together was one of the first activities we did. It was, and is, amazing. Six years ago, my son and I met some of our best friends in these classes.
Long story short, music heals. Music brings people together. Music lets people express themselves. My music classes promote being silly, having fun, letting loose, making friends, sharing laughs, all while learning basic music competence. The classes give you 45 minutes (or 55 minutes as my time management skills can be way off…I can get carried away when having a good time…😂) of time spent with your little person(s), with no technology, no looming work deadlines, no piles of laundry in sight…
Just you and yours having fun, building community, and setting your child off on the right path to developing a lifelong love for music.
Ok. Ok. I ramble.
Oh. And I am in my last semester of grad school pursuing a master’s on the family nurse practitioner tract. I aspire to have my own practice after graduation, helping families find their personal path to wellness. I have a special place in my heart for home hospice. I hope to see patients from newborn to end-of-life, in my office and in their homes. When I was a home hospice nurse, all of my patients received music therapy. Music heals on so many levels. 🌱
I do still plan on leading music classes after graduation, because I cannot imagine life without Music Together. Teaching is my outlet. My happy place. There is not much better in life than starting the day making music with you and yours!
